Canticles. Classic and Modern Armenian

By Mesrop Mashtots, Sahak Partev

Mesrop Mashtots (362 – February 17, 440) was an Armenian theologian, linguist and hymnologist. He is best known for having invented the Armenian alphabet c. 405 AD, which was a fundamental step in strengthening the Armenian statehood and the bond between the Armenian Kingdom and Armenians living in the Byzantine Empire and the Persian Empire. He was also, according to a number of scholars and contemporaneous Armenian sources, the creator of the Caucasian Albanian and Georgian alphabets.

Isaac or Sahak of Armenia (354–439) was Catholicos (or Patriarch) of the Armenian Apostolic Church. He is sometimes known as "Isaac the Great," and as "Sahak the Parthian" (Armenian: Sahak Parthev, Parthian: Sahak-i Parthaw) owing to his Parthian origin.
