Akhtala. History and Reality

Akhtala. History and Reality
Author: Aghasi Tadevosyan

The book is dedicated to the history, architecture, murals and describes the life of spiritual leaders and artisans of one of eminent monuments of Armenian medieval culture: Akhtala fortress and monastery and also to the modern days and history of the town Akhtala. Here for some time was treasured such an important relic as the St Cross. It is noteworthy that the prominent Armenian filmmaker of the 20th century, Sergey Parajanov had filmed some episodes of his famous film “The Color of the Pomegranate” inside the fresco covered walls of the Akhtala churches.

Akhtala is situated in the Lori province of the Republic of Armenia, in a mountainous and forested area of the historical Armenian province of Googark. On an elevated rocky outcrop, the medieval Akhtala fortress (10th century) and St. Astvatsatseen (Holy Virgin) monastery (1205-1216) were built. Man has inhabited this area for several centuries. Monuments dating back to the 3th-1st millennia B.C. were discovered here. The publication of this book is approved by the Scientific Council of the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography NAS RA.
