For about 11 centuries “The Book of Lamentations” of Grigor Narekatsi (Gregory of Narek) fascinates and captures the reader, heals, educates and brings up generations. A great many Armenian and international scientists and historians, artists, writers and poets, publishers and printers have taken a great interest in Narekatsi and his works. The following literary encyclopedia covers just a small part of all that has been done and said about Narekatsi. The encyclopedia contains Narekatsi’s works with about 150 articles and materials devoted to him, up to 600 colour, black and white pictures, Armenian, Cilician and Vaspurakan miniatures, paintings etc. The encyclopedia is devoted to the 500th anniversary of Armenian Printing.
Gregory of Narek (Grigor Narekatsi; 951 – 1003) was an Armenian monk, poet, mystical philosopher, theologian and saint of the Armenian Apostolic Church, born into a family of writers. He was “Armenia’s first great poet”. He is the author of mystical interpretation on the Song of Songs and numerous poetic writings. His Book of Prayers, also known as “Book of Lamentations”, a long mystical poem in 95 sections written around 977 has been translated to many languages. The book, the work of his mature years remains one of the definitive pieces of Armenian literature.
