About Aksel Bakunts

Aksel Bakunts (1899–1937), born Aleksandr Tevosyan, was an Armenian prose writer, screenwriter, translator, and public figure. Born in Goris, he remained closely connected to the landscapes and communities of Syunik that would later shape much of his fiction.

Bakunts is especially admired for concise, lyrical prose and for his sensitive portrayals of village life, memory, social change, and the natural world. Stories associated with Mtnadzor, Alpine Violet, and Mirhav are among the works through which readers encounter his distinctive voice.

His literary career was cut short during the Stalinist purges. Bakunts was posthumously rehabilitated, and his work has since been restored to a central place in twentieth-century Armenian prose.
