About Yeghishe Charents

Yeghishe Charents (1897–1937) was an Armenian poet, writer, and translator whose experimental voice helped reshape modern Armenian literature.

His poetry moved through symbolism, futurism, revolutionary enthusiasm, personal lyricism, and profound reflection on Armenia. Major works include Land of Nairi, Book of the Way, and the celebrated poem My Sweet Armenia.

During Stalin’s Great Purge, Charents was arrested in 1937 and died in custody. His books were banned, but manuscripts preserved by friends survived; he was later rehabilitated and is now regarded as one of Armenia’s most important modern poets.
