Description
One of the celebrated works of European literature, The Collector (1963), John Fowles' first published novel, catapulted him from modest tutor to serious writer. In form, this is a chamber psychological thriller (a maniac butterfly collector kidnaps the girl he likes, an aspiring artist, and keeps her locked up, as if making her the most important specimen of his collection), but the author has raised a multi-layered structure on this plot pillar like a skilled architect. The sharp antagonism of the characters has a number of plans: social (class inequality), psychological, literary and cultural (combination with Shakespeare's play "The Tempest", judgments about art, particularly fine arts) and comprehensive philosophical aspects. In addition, the book is written on behalf of one character and another, who are completely different people with their worldview and ideas.
