About Hovhannes Tumanyan

Hovhannes Tumanyan (1869–1923) was an Armenian poet, writer, translator, and public figure whose work occupies a central place in Armenian literature. Born in Dsegh in the Lori region, he later moved to Tiflis, an important center of Armenian cultural life.

Tumanyan wrote poetry, ballads, quatrains, stories, fables, and fairy tales. His writing often drew upon village life, oral tradition, folklore, and the landscapes and people of Lori. Its clarity and emotional directness helped many of his works become enduring parts of Armenian cultural memory.

Among his best-known works are Anush, Gikor, Akhtamar, The Dog and the Cat, A Drop of Honey, and numerous fairy tales for children. His writing has inspired operas, films, animation, and generations of readers in Armenia and throughout the diaspora.
