About Sayat-Nova

Born Harutyun Sayatyan in Tiflis, Sayat-Nova became one of the great ashughs of the Caucasus. He composed and performed songs in Armenian, Georgian, Azerbaijani, and Persian, serving for a time at the Georgian royal court.

His surviving songs are admired for their musical invention, vivid imagery, and intense expressions of love. Sayat-Nova’s life and art have inspired scholarship, performance, painting, and Sergei Parajanov’s landmark film The Color of Pomegranates.
