Description
The novel "The House of Ulloa" is the masterpiece of Emilia Pardo Bazan (1851-1921), the greatest Spanish writer, journalist, critic, translator, bringer of naturalism to Spanish literature and defender of women's rights. Pardo Bazan started writing at an early age, in the 1880s she was already known as a poetess and the author of two novels, but her novel "The House of Ulloa", published in 1886, brought her immediate fame, which critics consider one of the most important works of the 19th century. In the novel, on the example of the dynastic castle, its young owner, Marquis Don Pedro Moscoso, and other residents, the author presents the Jaralian village cut off from civilization in naturalistic lines, the brutal manners there, which ultimately crush and marginalize the educated and moral persons who do not adapt to the prevailing situation, such as the Marquis's wife. and the Castle Chaplain. In 1985, the novel was made into a screen and was a great success in Spain.
