Arthur Conan Doyle (1859–1930) was a Scottish physician and writer best known as the creator of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. His stories helped establish the modern detective genre through observation, deduction, and atmosphere.

Holmes first appeared in A Study in Scarlet and returned in novels and dozens of short stories, including The Hound of the Baskervilles. Conan Doyle also wrote historical fiction, science fiction, adventure, poetry, and nonfiction.
