On the first page of the composition, a red-figure krater (crater, 360-340 BC) with a comic scene. on the left is Dionysus, on the right is a comedian with a basket on his head (British Museum). On the fourth page: a marble mask of a comedian (II century BC, Archaeological Museum of Athens), on the obverse: Aristophanes, an ancient Greek sculpture: BC. Roman copy of the 1st century (Uffizi Gallery, Florence). The book covers five famous comedies by the great Greek comedian, the "father of comedy" Aristophanes (c. 446 - c. 385 BC): "The Knights", "The Clouds", "Wasps", "Lysistrata", "The Frogs", all with a new original translation ("The Wasps", "Lysistrata" and "The Frogs" were translated into Armenian for the first time, the translation included in the collection "Chrestomatia of Ancient Literature" [1952] previous to "The Knights" was made from Russian, "The Clouds", which was first published in the original translation by Aram Topchyan in 1990, is included in this volume in a substantially reformed version). The introduction not only discusses the comedies themselves, but also briefly presents the life of Aristophanes, the characteristics of ancient Greek theater, and the structural and stylistic features of comedies. Aristophanes' comedies are masterpieces both in terms of content and structure, his intriguing, funny stories, sharp political satire and witty domestic humor have captivated readers and audiences for centuries and are still relevant today.
