Travel Notes

Archpriest Yeghishe (Christian name: Hovakim) Geghamiants (Haykuny) was born in Akhaltskha in 1840. He wrote his Travel Notes while making a trip in Artsakh at the age of 45.
Despite its modest title, his work abounds in information relating to the history, lapidary heritage, ethnography, folk-lore, statistics, as well as the educational and economic state of Artsakh.
This book of immense value and interest was published only once, in 1885, within a series of 43 articles in the ""Meghu Hayastani"" two-day periodical. During his lifetime, Geghamiants, who died in Tpghis in 1920, was not able to publish the articles in a single book, as a result of which, they were unjustly ignored even by philologists and historians engaged in studies of Artsakh.
We are convinced that the present work, which has gathered all his articles together, will have its proper place beside Bishop Makar Barkhutariants' fundamental work, Artsakh, and will contribute to the further development of the Studies of Artsakh.
The editorial staff made some partial changes and verifications in the work, the original text of which has been supplemented with photographs of the places visited by Geghamiants and a map of his route.
