Description

Zareh Vorbuni - The Persecuted, Vol 1

This first volume of French-Armenian writer Zareh Vorbuni’s (Éoyksüzyan) monumental three-part publication compiles the first three novels from his The Persecuted series: The Trial (1929), The Candidate (1967), and The Asphalt (1972). These works explore the life of a generation grappling with the loss of home and kin, viewing exile both as a wound and a space for transformation. Vorpouni stands among the first in the Armenian diaspora to process displacement not just thematically, but through the very form and language of literature. For him, diaspora is at once the tragedy of an irretrievably lost homeland and an opportunity for forging a new intellectual subjectivity. The series’ title, The Persecuted, and the author’s pseudonym underscore the paradoxical experience of Armenian identity in the 20th century. This critical edition includes detailed annotations highlighting textual variations between the first editions, preserved manuscripts, and significant French translations. The volume also features Marc Nichanian’s in-depth essay "Literature as Correction."
