Description
The third volume of the critical edition of Zareh Vorbuni’s fiction includes the final four novels of The Persecuted series: And There Was Man (1964), For Yours Is the Power (1977), Monique, or Asphalt Two (1978), and Before the Deluge—all written between roughly 1956 and 1980. The second part of the volume features earlier works published in literary journals between the 1930s and 1970s, including Freedom for the Imprisoned (1937), The Skin of Man (1940), The Persecuted (a fragment from the novel of the same name), and Françoise (1972). Except for The Persecuted, these are excerpts from incomplete or lost novels. Additionally, two standalone texts are included: The Death Notice (1980), likely Vorbuni’s final completed work, where fiction and autobiography blend. A Biographical Ramble with Gurgen Mahari, a letter written in the 1960s at Mahari’s request, now restored to its original form as a valuable biographical document. This volume brings together all known complete and incomplete fictional works by Vorbuni. While the author expressed his literary vision across various interviews, letters, essays, and diary entries—many of which are recorded in his Journal—these materials were deliberately excluded from this edition to maintain a manageable size. They may be compiled in a future volume.
