Description

Hakob Mndzuri - Compositions. Book I

Hakob Mndzuri (1886-1978), born in the village of Armtan in Western Armenia, spent almost his entire life in Constantinople. He stands as one of the most distinctive figures in Armenian prose. Despite losing his entire family during the Great Genocide, Mndzuri continued to live in Constantinople, enduring a hard and difficult life. In his nearly 200 stories, much like his fellow Armenian Diaspora writers, he recreated the lost paradise of his native village and former life that no longer exists. In his collections Blue Light (1958), Armtan (1966), and Krunk, Why Did You Come (1974), as well as his contributions to the press, Mndzuri presents his native village and its people as they were before 1915. It seems that time has stopped, and somewhere in the distance, on the slopes of the Mdzur mountains, his characters still live: hardworking, kind, sometimes crooked, grumpy, enduring their hard lives and small pleasures. The first volume of Mndzuri's works includes 122 short stories and other materials from his three famous collections, published together for the first time. The book is compiled, annotated, and introduced by the poet and translator Hakob Movses.
