Description
Nicolas Mathieu – And Their Children After Them
Nicolas Mathieu has written a great French novel about a generation that must find its way in a changing world. But how, if the drama of life began with an insignificant teenage decision? Four summers, four episodes – from Nirvana hits to the 1998 FIFA World Cup. The book tells the story of 1990s France, small towns and panel housing estates, the boredom of beaches and abandoned factories. Children of unemployed parents, for whom a big dream is a luxury, listen to Nirvana, ride mopeds, smoke weed, and dream of sex. Life is compressed between memories and decline, politeness and rudeness. "And Their Children After Them" won the most prestigious Goncourt Prize for French-language literature, and its English translation received the "Albertine" Prize. It has been translated into 20 languages. A film of the same name, based on the novel, was shot in 2024 and presented at the Venice International Film Festival.
