Description
Philippe Marczewski – When Cécile
Cécile died at the age of 27 in a plane crash. The main character of the book, who had a brief romance with Cécile in his youth, continues to feel her vague, almost gentle presence even after her death. And little by little, the memory itself begins to fade. However, one day on the street, he sees a woman who looks very much like Cécile. He begins to follow the stranger: what if it really is Cécile, who has returned through some space-time trick? The feeling of absence turns into an illusory obsession, and he imagines the thousands of possible lives that Cécile could have lived. The author has constructed the novel as one long, almost uninterrupted sentence, as if he does not want to put a full stop, because a full stop would mean the end of Cécile's presence. What place do we allocate within ourselves to those we have loved, those who have left, those who have disappeared? Philippe Marczewski tells a story about the relationship between memory and forgetting.
