The Restoration of Dad Monastery 1997-2011, RAA #17

Author: Samvel Ayvazyan

Dedicated to the 800th anniversary of the construction of the main domed church of the monastery (1214 to 2014)
One of the most renowned medieval Armenian religious monuments, the monastery of Dad, stands not far from the left bank of the river Trtu (Tartar), in Upper Khachen District of Artsakh Province (present-day Karvajar District of the Republic of Artsakh).

It comprises more than twenty various structures the earliest of which are traditionally traced back to the 1st century A.D. (the oldest preserved monastic monuments date at least from the 12th to 18th centuries.

The liberation of Karvajar District in 1993 provided favourable conditions not only for research into the monastery but also for its restoration and future functioning.
