Vardges Sureniants is the founder of the historical genre of the Armenian fine arts and the founder of the contemporary Armenian book illustration. He organically combined the cultures of the Middle East and West by creating a deeply national and inimitable style of his own. Dedicated to the artist's 150th anniversary.

Vardges Surenyants (27 February 1860 – 6 April 1921) was an Russian Armenian painter, sculptor, illustrator, translator, art critic, and theater artist. He is considered the founder of Armenian historical painting. His paintings feature scenes from Armenian fairy-tales and various historical events. Although Surenyants had one exhibition dedicated to his works in his lifetime, he was admired by many of his contemporaries which include many well-known figures in Russian and Armenian society including Martiros Saryan, Ilya Repin, and Vladimir Stasov.
